TRAVEL & WALKING

What to wear for a long train ride

A train outfit has to work in a seat, on a platform and while you lift luggage. Dress for the longest part of the trip first: several hours sitting. Then add the pieces you need for the platform and the destination.

Choose clothes that stay comfortable seated

Try an easy waistband, a top that does not pull at the shoulder and closed shoes you can walk in quickly. Make sure a wide leg does not catch the step when you board. A soft coordinated outfit can work for casual travel; swap the top or add a neat overshirt if you have plans immediately after arrival. Keep anything you might need mid-journey in a pocket or bag you can reach without standing.

Carry one layer within reach

A light zip layer or cardigan is easier to take off at a seat than a heavy pullover. Pack it above the rest of your luggage or carry it in your day bag. If you expect a cold platform, wear the warmer outer layer at boarding and put it away once settled. A scarf or long coat should not trail into the aisle.

Try a luggage rehearsal

Sit with your day bag by your feet. Stand, take a step and lift the bag you will actually carry. Check that the trousers, cuffs and shoes do not get in the way. If they do, use the smaller bag or change the piece that catches.
