WORK & STUDY

From a walking commute to a meeting

When you have a meeting soon after you arrive, choose one base that can move between the two. Decide what you need to change at the door and how much time you really have. A well-planned two-minute switch is easier than rebuilding your outfit in a restroom.

Protect the meeting pieces

Start with comfortable trousers and a shirt or knit you can move in. If the meeting requires a jacket, carry it on the warmest leg of the journey when practical, and put it on once you arrive. A jacket that pulls around the shoulders under a bag will be easier to wear when the bag comes off. The photograph shows a coordinated suit; match that level of formality to your actual meeting.

Keep the change small

If casual walking shoes are acceptable in the meeting, use a clean pair and skip the switch. Otherwise, pack suitable shoes in a separate bag and check the trouser length with both pairs. Leave time to change shoes and straighten the shirt. If you cannot stop before entering, wear a single pair that fits the dress code and is already comfortable for the walk.

Test the transition

Try the full meeting outfit, then remove only the pieces you will carry or change. Put those pieces in your bag and close it. If something needs extra packing space or another hand to carry it, simplify the transition before you leave.
