How to wear one bold color to a casual gathering
A bold color works best when the outfit still feels like something you would wear on an ordinary day. Use color in one piece you enjoy, then let fit, shoes and weather carry the practical decisions. There is no need to match accessories exactly.

Start with the amount of color you want
A one-piece outfit can make a large area of color feel simple. A bright top with familiar trousers is a smaller first step, and a bag or scarf is smaller still. If a jumpsuit appeals to you, check that you can sit comfortably and manage the fastening on your own. Choose a shoe that suits the actual venue before deciding which colors to combine.
Keep a neutral piece available
A dark or light layer you already wear often can soften a strong color when you arrive. Try it over the outfit so you can see how much of the color remains. Use it if the weather or venue calls for it; the bright piece should still feel complete when the layer comes off. If you prefer a pattern, use one that has the accent color in it rather than chasing an exact match.
Try it under two kinds of light
Look at the outfit by a window and in a warmer room. Some colors read differently indoors. If you like it in one light but feel uneasy in the other, reduce the amount of the accent. Keep the fit and shoes familiar while you experiment with color.
