TRAVEL & WALKING

Dress for sightseeing when showers come and go

Intermittent rain makes the change between outside and inside the main challenge. Plan for open streets, crowded entrances and a place to stow wet items. Choose an outfit that stays usable when you fold the umbrella and step into a museum or café.

Choose rain protection you can manage

A shell with a hood leaves both hands free for a ticket, phone or bag. An umbrella can work well on quieter streets in light wind. On a busy route, consider whether you can safely handle it without blocking your view or bumping others. Choose grippy footwear you already use in wet conditions and trousers with a hem clear of puddles. The photo shows one umbrella option; your outer layer should match the actual rain.

Have a dry place for the indoor items

Keep a wet outer layer away from a dry spare top or paper tickets. Bring a small separate bag for the umbrella if you will be going in and out frequently, or follow the venue’s umbrella storage rules. A simple shirt or knit should still feel presentable when the shell comes off. Carry a fresh pair of socks if a wet stretch is likely.

Check the moment you enter a building

Try closing the umbrella or removing the hood while holding your bag. Check that you can reach your ticket without unpacking. If the combination needs too many hands, simplify it before leaving. Change your route when the weather makes the planned walk impractical.
